Mount Baldy, Old Baldy, or more formally, Mount San Antonio — whatever you call this mountain, the trek to the summit is considered a right of passage for SoCal hikers. Baldy towers over the San Gabriel Mountains and is the highest point in the range. The far-reaching panoramic views found at the exposed 10,064-foot summit attract plenty of hikers. Two major routes go to the top:

Both hikes depart from Manker Flats and can be combined into one scenic and challenging 11.3-mile loop with 3,900 feet of elevation gain.

A ski lift operating on weekends can be used to fly up to Baldy Notch and back for $20 (as of 2017). The lift cuts 1,500 vertical feet out of the hike (and may be condoned as cheating). The ski lift omits the least interesting segment of the hike, so utilizing it is understandable.

The hike to the top of Old Baldy in Kananaskis Country begins from the Evan-Thomas Creek parking lot located on the east side of Kananaskis Trail   (Hwy 40), south of Boundary Ranch , and north of Wedge Pond , across the trail from Mount Kidd .  It is about 2 KM (1¹⁄₃ miles) from Evan-Thomas parking to the trail-head and 5.3 KM (3¹⁄₃ miles) from trail-head to summit with net elevation gain of 862 m (2,830 ft) to maximum altitude of 2,286 m (7,830 ft).

Out of the parking lot, a brief walk south leads to a left turn onto Evans-Thomas Creek Road which parallels  Evans-Thomas Creek and provides impressive, periodic views of  'the Wedge' and the Fortress .

On about 2 KM (1¼ miles) of straight and relatively flat road, with leisurely elevation gain, it is important to resist the urge to take multiple trail alternatives on both sides until arriving at a clear option on a road turning left.  Hiking at an average around 4 KM per hour will arrive at the correct trail junction in about 30 minutes and it looks like the photo following the pretty bee-laden flower.

Note: Dick and Marian Baldy were inducted into the College of Agriculture Hall of Honor in October. Sarah DeForest, College of Agriculture advancement director, compiled their biography. Kathleen McPartland, Public Affairs and Publications, interviewed them recently and added personal comments.

Dick and Marian Baldy met at UC Davis in 1965 and were married four months later. Dick asked Marian to marry him on their second date. “This was quite uncharacteristic of me,” said Baldy, usually deliberate about making decisions. He describes his attraction to Marian as physical, of course, but also intellectual.  “Marian is extremely bright and I could foresee an exciting life with her.  I saw that we could have an equal partnership.  I think this is important for both men and women.“

While Dick pursued his PhD in plant physiology, Marian earned her PhD in genetics. They spent two years in post-doctoral positions in Portland, Ore., and in the fall of 1970, Dick was hired by Chico State to teach pomology and master’s degree courses in what was then the College of Agriculture, Engineering, and Nursing.
